Light-Based Sculpture/Installation
Kaleidoscopic illustrates Buffalo’s move from manufacturing center to incubator of new ideas through light’s evolving relationship to structure and spectator. This is first achieved by light casting a single spectator’s shadow onto the wall of the silo at ground level. As more spectators enter the chamber, additional shadows are cast, and a fractal pattern is achieved. When the space fills with more than eight spectators, reflected light grows up the 120’ tube, symbolically creating the dawn of a new state of being.
Artists Lynne Koscielniak and Ian Shelanskey explore the relationship between designer and programmer in order to use new technologies in experiential artwork. Kaleidoscopic, their first responsive environment, illustrates Buffalo’s move from manufacturing center to incubator of new ideas through light. A lone shadow evolves into a sea of colored light as the population of the silo rises.
